    Dear New Paltz Families:

Although our students remain in all-remote learning through Friday, January 15, I wanted to keep you updated on COVID-positive test results within our school population.

Since our return on Monday, January 4th we have been made aware of several students in our school buildings who have tested positive for COVID-19.  In all situations, the students involved became symptomatic and tested positive over the winter break.  The students that tested positive were last on campus no later than December 18.  Therefore in accordance with the New York State Department of Health Toolkit and guidance from the Ulster County Department of Health, no school-related exposure exists.  All required notifications have been made

    As of today they include:

    • Four New Paltz High School students
    • One Lenape Elementary School student
    • One New Paltz Middle School student

As data trends in the region indicate, the prediction of increased positive cases after the holiday gatherings has come to be reality.  This was the rationale that drove our decision to shift to all-remote learning following the winter break.  I wish we had been wrong.

I would like to remind everyone that it is essential that students who have COVID-19 symptoms see their healthcare provider (HCP) and follow any recommendations they make for testing or, in the event of an alternative diagnosis, for treatment of that illness.  If a student exhibits COVID-related symptoms, and is not tested or seen by a HCP, they are expected to remain out of school for 10 days from the onset of symptoms.

Each of us, individually, plays an important role in keeping our community safe and our schools open.  Personal choices can determine whether someone spreads the virus or not.  We urge everyone to be proactive in their choices, especially if they have had prolonged exposure to groups or gatherings without social distancing or face coverings.

As a reminder, the complete school attendance and return-to-school decision flowcharts can be found by clicking this link to the New York State Department of Health Guidance.

And finally, please continue to communicate with your school principals and our nurses.  I wish each of you peace and good health.

    Sincerely,

    Angela Urbina-Medina

    Superintendent
