Asian Culture Club Welcomes Everyone to the Table

The High School Asian Culture Club meets regularly to discuss various topics about Asian culture. Recently, their discussion involved preparation for their upcoming trip to “99 Flavors,” a Korean barbeque restaurant in Queens. Club advisor Galo Vasquez led the group of over 20 students in discussion about the history and tradition of Korean barbeque, as well as the ingredients and the spices they might expect to encounter. The group reviewed some of the additional Korean-themed visits they would make while in the area, such as going to an Asian food market, a variety store, a tea shop, and more.

Grade 11 student Mina Pine said she is half Japanese and joined the club to embrace her culture and celebrate it. Grade 9 student Jasmine Chainam said the appeal of the club is its approachable nature. “I’m Asian and this place is very welcoming,” she said. “Everyone is so talkative and nice. It’s always fun.” Grade 12 student Madison Rosario is in her second year of attending the club, and said she appreciates the focus of exploring different cultures. The club is open to all ethnicities and grades and meets on Fridays. For more information, contact Mr. Vasquez at gvasquez@newpaltz.k12.ny.us
