Duzine Elementary School’s three Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) classes have taken hands-on learning to new heights with a Backyard Bird Unit. After the winter break, our Pre-K students were greeted by stuffed birds that mirror the birds they see outside and at the bird feeder by their classroom window. Each student was able to choose a bird to adopt, care for, and play with for the length of the unit—complete with an official certificate of adoption! Throughout the unit, students will learn about the life cycle of birds: where they live, what they eat, how they stay warm during the winter, and where they drink if the water is frozen.  The dramatic play area has been transformed into a bustling animal hospital, where students take on roles as patients, doctors, and receptionists, honing their oral, written, socialization, and problem-solving skills. In the block area, students collaborate to create Bird Town, where they will brainstorm needs, establish community rules, and, once completed, gather there for playful adventures.
