Maley's Early Explorers

Lenape Elementary School students in Adrienne Maley’s Grade 4 class have been supplementing their research with their imaginations. Students chose an early explorer such as Henry Hudson, Samuel de Champlain, or Giovanni de Verrazano to study and then wrote letters as the explorers themselves, describing the trials, triumphs and hardships noted in history from their point of view. One student’s letter “written” by Champlain read, “Henry IV sent me to explore the new worlds for new land. I will need to find riches and conquer new land for the French, I will be gone for one year, then I will return.” Since the letters would have been written in the seventeenth century, students wrote their letters in cursive and “aged” the paper in a tea bath and wrinkles for an authentic feel. Well done!
