After learning about women’s suffrage and other events during the Progressive Age, students were asked to work in groups and choose a challenge that women faced in the era, then profile a woman from history who surmounted that challenge by telling “Herstory,” and create a symbol that conveyed her struggle. Recently, NPMS’s School of Rock band traveled to Duzine Elementary School, where Duzine Principal Ross Hogan introduced the group’s performance by asking the time-honored question, “Are you ready to rock…?” The under-eight-years-old crowd responded with a resounding ‘Yes!’” Grade 7 and Grade 8 student musicians from band and chorus audition every fall for the Middle School’s afterschool School of Rock program. Middle School Grade 6 students in MaryJane Nusbaum and Kim Abrahamsen’s art classes honored Black History Month by learning about AFRICOBRA an art movement created by a Chicago-based group of black artists whose shared aim was to develop their own aesthetic in the visual arts in order to empower and uplift black communities.
