Science Olympians Among Us

The New Paltz High School Science Olympiad Team is looking to add to its ranks of science-minded students to compete in this year’s Mid-Hudson Regional Tournament. Led by Science teacher Matt Esposito, the students have been meeting every Thursday to plan for their first event, which will be held in February at John Jay High School. The junior scientists will compete against more than 33 teams from schools across the Mid-Hudson Valley in events ranging from building a bridge to forestry to code busting. While there, student competitors are welcome to participate in “study” events in which they take a test for team points. This is also an efficient way for students in Advanced Placement classes to double down on learning for their own exams!
Esposito noted that students could enhance their college or employment résumes by participating in Science Olympiad. The club also gives students the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of science and to make friends with those who share similar interests.
