• There are two sections to this page.  The first deals with community opportunities that you should absolutely take advantage of, and the second deals with summer camp opportunities.

    Musical Ensembles in Our Community:

If you are planning on continuing to play music after high school, you will find these opportunities helpful!  Whether or not you choose to make music your career, these opportunities will give you the opportunity to grow as a musician and challenge yourself.  (They also look pretty good on a college application, too!)

SUNY Ulster Community Band - Meets on Wednesday evenings during the college academic year.  Open to all interested people, this band performs music that is challenging, interesting, and worthwhile.  This group is made up of anyone who enjoys playing their instrument! Contact the director at Vicizzo2@gmail.com.

SUNY New Paltz Symphonic Band - located right in town, this band is open to community members who are interested in performing challenging and fun music.  Contact the director, Adam Fontana, at fontanaa@newpaltz.edu

SUNY Ulster Wind Ensemble-  This group is the select ensemble at SUNY Ulster.  It performs challenging repertoire and new music from the most highly innovative composers in the band world.  To qualify for this group, you must first perform a NYSSMA level VI instrumental solo at a solo festival.  Contact the director at Vicizzo2@gmail.com.

Big Blue Big Band - This jazz group is a semi-professional big band, with a storied history right here in the Hudson Valley.  The members have many years of experience, and can teach you a great deal.  I personally learned a GREAT DEAL from my experiences with the group, and still perform with them on occasion as a substitute.  Contact the director at bigbluebigband@gmail.com.

    Summer Camps

Fredonia Summer Music Festival/Crane Youth Music - both of these camps are based at colleges that specialize in music study.  The camps are a great introductory camp experience for someone who wants to spend time making and playing music, while also having ample social time as well.

New York State Summer School for the Arts - These programs are intensive programs sponsored by the NY State Education Department.  These 4 week programs allow you to focus on your chosen craft (Instrumental Music or Choral Music) in a setting much like a professional or collegiate setting.  Students who attend these programs are people who enjoy rehearsing for many hours daily, while still having some time for relaxation or socialization.  These programs are HIGHLY recommended by Mr. N.  You will need to audtion during the winter months to earn acceptance to these programs.
