Mr. Newsome

 

 

Sam Newsome is a music educator and  well-known trombonist in the Hudson Valley.  With musical experience that has ranged from professional orchestral performances to jazz and rock bands and live studio recordings,  he has performed with The Big Smoothies, the Willi Amrod Band, the Bottoms Up Jazz Band, Blue Food, Professor Louie and The Crowmatix, The Big Takeover, and for the last 14 years as a member of the Woodstock Playhouse Pit Orchestra, as well as many side projects.

A resident of Kingston, NY since 1996, Newsome grew up playing in community-based bands and ensembles from a young age, and some of his proudest memories are playing with his entire family in the Saugerties Community Band, being asked to 'sub' for his father's brass quintet as a high school student, and learning alongside experienced musicians as a member of the Big Blue Big Band and Kingston, NY Lions Club's "Roarin' Pride" Jazz Band as a young player.

Newsome is also a journeyman brass instrument repair technician who learned the trade from experienced technicians at Barcone's Music in Kingston, with 15 summer seasons of experience on the 'brass bench.'

As a performer, Newsome toured America’s waterways with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra for three separate seasons, and performed in numerous orchestral performances with the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, Northern Dutchess Symphony, and Newburgh Symphony.

Mr. Newsome is the band director at New Paltz High School, directing Concert Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, African Drumming, Music History and Music Theory courses.  Sam holds a Masters degree in Wind Conducting and Bachelors degrees in Music Performance(trombone) and Music Education(euphonium) from the State University of New York at Fredonia.
