• Tanis and Williams are Sworn in for Three More Years

The New Paltz Central School District (NPCSD) Board of Education (BOE) swore in two Board members, incumbent Bianca Tanis and former BOE member Matthew Williams, during the BOE’s annual Reorganizational meeting held on July 6. Tanis was elected to serve another year as Board president, and Johanna Herget was elected vice president.

Tanis has been a member of the New Paltz BOE since 2019 and has served on the Legislative Action Committee, the Facilities Committee, and the Policy Committee. She works as a special education teacher in the Suffern Central School District, teaching a therapeutic support class for students in Kindergarten and Grade 1. She has two children; one is a college student, and the other is currently enrolled at New Paltz High School.

Tanis said she will use her former experiences and passion for education to continue serving the community. “My main objective for the 2022-2023 school year is to have a successful search for a new superintendent and to ensure that the District continues to follow through on important initiatives during this period of transition.”

Williams, a senior manager at a software engineering firm, served as a Board trustee from 2016-2019 and was appointed in December 2020 to temporarily fill a vacant seat on the BOE. Williams has four children who attend Lenape, Duzine, and preschool. He has served on the Facilities Committee and the Audit and Legislative Action Committees.

Williams’ continuity and experience will be valuable in the search for a new superintendent. “I was not involved in the last search, and the realization that I'll be making a decision that could impact the District for decades is not lost on me,” he said. Williams said he believes that his background will be an asset in preparing the 2023-2024 school year budget and helping to support the Universal Pre-K and other programs.

Tanis and Williams said they look forward to a positive and productive year on the BOE.
