High School Students Recite Poetry Out Loud

Poetry Alert: The High School recently hosted a Poetry Out Loud event for poetry admirers to perform in or attend. Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition for high school students across the country, fostering public speaking skills, self-confidence, and learning about literary history and contemporary life. A panel of teachers from the High School used a rubric to evaluate the students’ performances in areas including dramatization, accuracy, and articulation. Poems ranged from Robert Frost’s reflective “Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening” to the very dark "Windigo” by Louise Erdrich. Students chose from Poetry Out Loud’s list of approved poems. Many competitors explained that they felt a personal connection to their selected poem, or appreciated the mood it conveyed. The two students who scored the highest will move on to a semifinal competition at the State University of New York at New Paltz. We wish them the best of luck!
